Singer Azawi has addressed the controversy surrounding her decision to delete tweets that urged the government to “listen to youth before it’s too late” and expressed support for the anti-corruption protests.
The move had sparked criticism against Benon, the Swangz Avenue boss, with many netizens accusing him of pressuring Azawi to remove the tweets to prevent the record label from being associated with political activism.
However, in a brief statement, the “Masavu” singer clarified the situation:
“Yo guys waguan, I want to clarify that I personally deleted my post because I have full control over my Twitter account and trust me, I didn’t do it to please those doing this country faulty, I can never give such cowards that satisfaction. I realized that some individuals intended to misuse my voice for malicious purposes, and I did not want to give them that opportunity. However, this does not mean that my stance on ‘Abakamuzi’ has changed. I firmly believe that the voices of our country’s youth need to be heard and respected, and our leaders MUST be accountable to the people they serve. It remains my sincere hope that we can achieve this. I apologize to those that I made feel like I had quit our fight and cause, it wasn’t my intention. We’re still in this together and one day we shall be heard.”
The anti-corruption protest, predominantly youth-led, has seen limited support from performing artists, with Azawi being one of the few who have publicly backed the cause. Her tweets had called on the government to take the concerns of the youth seriously and to address the pervasive corruption affecting the nation.
