Balam Barugahala, the well-known events promoter turned minister, has taken the initiative to fulfill his promise of advocating for the release of political prisoners, particularly those associated with the National Unity Platform (NUP) who have been detained for the past 2-3 years.

Following his recent appointment as minister, Balam pledged to prioritize the liberation of incarcerated youth, particularly supporters of the NUP. This commitment was reiterated during his swearing-in ceremony.

During the ceremony, Balam seized the opportunity to introduce a NUP councilor from Masaka who expressed willingness to defect to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

In his address, the councilor, identified as Katerega, appealed to President Museveni for the release of NUP supporters, citing their alleged exploitation by selfish politicians. President Museveni responded by instructing his Secretary to compile a list of imprisoned individuals, excluding murderers, for review.

Balam, previously associated with the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political group advocating for the presidency of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has now embarked on efforts to secure the freedom of detained NUP members as part of his ministerial duties.
