Edrine Walujjo, a forward for the City Oilers, was arrested in Kampala for allegedly attempting to fix matches during the ongoing FIBA 3X3 Nations League. Walujjo is accused of offering players from the Benin women’s team $4,000 each to lose a game. When the players informed their team management, a sting operation was organized, leading to Walujjo’s arrest at Lugogo Hockey Grounds.
The scandal deepened as it was revealed that Walujjo also approached the Benin men’s team with a similar offer. Evidence, including message exchanges, was reportedly provided by the Benin team to the authorities. Following his arrest, Walujjo was detained at Jinja Road Police Station but later released on police bond as investigations proceed.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire confirmed the arrest, noting that Walujjo was caught soliciting favors from the Benin team to deliberately lose their match. FUBA President Nasser Sserunjogi stated that the matter is now in the hands of the police and that FUBA has begun its disciplinary process against Walujjo.
City Oilers team manager Grace Kwizera acknowledged the incident, confirming that the club is following the investigations closely and has initiated its internal disciplinary process. With the Oilers set to play in the NBL semifinals on August 16, it remains uncertain whether Walujjo will be available to participate, as he could face severe legal consequences, including up to five years in jail or a fine of Shs100 million if found guilty of match-fixing.
