Beloved Former News Anchor Ermer KMID/KPEJ anchor, Eddie R. Flores, succumbed to his decade-long struggle with cancer on Tuesday, leaving news organizations across the state in mourning for a cherished friend and colleague. His wife, Sarah Flores, announced his passing on social media, expressing gratitude for the support and remembering Eddie as both a resilient Marine and devout Christian.
Eddie joined the Big 2 News team in 2018, where he served as a main news anchor alongside Katie Orth. Prior to his time in the Basin, he contributed to the news landscape in the Rio Grande Valley, anchoring at KGBT and earning accolades at KRGV, including two Edward R. Murrow Awards for Best Investigative Report and Best News Series during his 12-year tenure.
Beginning his career as a weekend sports anchor in Yuma, Arizona, Eddie’s journey took him through Austin and Corpus Christi, where he seamlessly transitioned from sports reporting to news journalism. Not only a dedicated newsman, Eddie took pride in his military service, completing a tour with the United States Marine Corps, pursuing higher education, and even competing as an amateur fighter as part of the All-West Pacific Boxing Team.
Despite his impactful career being cut short by illness at Big 2 News, Eddie left an enduring impression on emerging journalists who appreciated his guidance. Today, our thoughts and prayers go out to Eddie’s wife, children, grandchildren, mother, and sister as they navigate through this difficult time, remembering a man whose legacy extends beyond the newsroom.
