Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her lead prosecutor, Nathan Wade, found themselves addressing assertions of a “personal” relationship amidst their legal battle over the 2020 election case. Despite affirming the existence of a personal bond, both vehemently denied any financial impropriety regarding Wade’s hiring.

In a recent court filing, Willis, at the forefront of Georgia’s criminal proceedings against former President Donald Trump and his associates, disclosed an affidavit from Wade. This affidavit revealed that their personal connection evolved alongside their professional collaboration and friendship since 2022. Wade explicitly stated that Willis hadn’t received any financial benefits from his earnings as the Special Prosecutor on the case.

Moreover, Willis asserted that their personal relationship had never involved any form of financial gain for her. These responses came in the wake of allegations leveled by one of Trump’s co-defendants, insinuating a conflict of interest and romantic involvement between Willis and Wade. However, Willis maintained in the filing that such allegations failed to meet the legal threshold for her disqualification from the Georgia election interference case. She characterized the accusations as “salacious” and media-driven, emphasizing their lack of substantive legal grounds for disqualification or judicial inquiry.

The defense’s attempts to challenge Willis’s involvement in the case fell short of establishing any financial or personal conflicts of interest deemed legally disqualifying. Willis emphasized her lack of public statements warranting disqualification or judicial scrutiny. As the legal battle over election integrity continues to unfold in Georgia, Willis and Wade stand firm in their position, affirming the integrity of their professional conduct and the impartiality of their legal pursuit.
