Gilbert Arinaitwe Bwana, the police detective notorious for his 2011 assault on Dr. Kizza Besigye, has been committed to the High Court on charges of aggravated trafficking. Arinaitwe gained infamy for breaking the windows of Dr. Besigye’s car and pepper-spraying him at Mulago roundabout.
On Tuesday, Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi directed Arinaitwe to report to the registrar of the International Crimes Division (ICD) every last Thursday of the month until his High Court session.
The charges allege that Arinaitwe recruited, transported, and harbored his 23-year-old housemaid for sexual exploitation at his home in Nalumunye-Bandwe, Kyengera town council. State Attorney Ivan Kyazze informed the court that sufficient evidence has been gathered to prosecute Arinaitwe.
Evidence presented in court indicates that the victim, who had been living with her father in Ntungamo district, dropped out of school in 2018 due to illness. In 2022, she left an abusive marriage and sought employment. Arinaitwe coordinated her travel from Mbarara to Kampala to work as a housemaid for a monthly wage of Shs 70,000.
The court documents describe several incidents where Arinaitwe allegedly made sexual advances towards the victim. In one instance, he left his girlfriend in bed, approached the victim in the kitchen, made sexual gestures, and attempted to remove his towel. The victim resisted and pushed him away.
The state contends that after Arinaitwe’s girlfriend left in early July 2023, he repeatedly attempted to assault the victim. On one occasion, he allegedly followed her to the bedroom and raped her. The documents also detail an incident on July 18, 2023, where Arinaitwe, armed with a pistol, forced the victim to have sex with him in the sitting room.
