The Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) has forecasted above-normal rainfall for the month of April, marking the peak of the March, April, and May (MAM) rainy season across Uganda.

According to the Acting Executive Director of UNMA, Bob Alex Ogwang, April typically sees heightened seasonal rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across most parts of the country. This year, UNMA expects enhanced rainfall throughout April 2024.

The anticipated rainfall has significant implications for various sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, and water management.

UNMA’s advisory underscores the importance of preparedness among stakeholders to mitigate potential impacts such as flooding, soil erosion, and disruptions to transportation networks.

Already in April, heavy rains have caused flash floods at Entebbe International Airport, disrupting airport operations. Entebbe received a maximum of 106.8 millimetres of rainfall in a single day, setting a record for the highest rainfall accumulation.

Reports indicate heavy rainfall in other parts of Uganda, including Hoima, Iganga, Serere Districts, and Butaleja District, where one fatality was reported due to the weather, along with property damage and displacement.

UNMA forecasts minimum temperatures between 20°C and 26°C across much of the northern half of Uganda, while southern regions may experience temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C. Highland areas like Rwenzori and Elgon are expected to have temperatures below 12°C.

Potential Impacts and Advisories:

  • Agriculture: Farmers are advised to intensify planting and weeding to manage weed growth and increase productivity. Soil and water conservation practices are recommended to minimize erosion and waterlogging.
  • Livestock: Pastoral areas will benefit from improved pasture growth, but farmers should prepare for increased pest and disease incidence. Proper pasture management and disease prevention measures are encouraged.
  • Health Risks: UNMA warns of waterborne diseases like cholera and bilharzia due to potential flash floods. Local authorities are urged to clear drainages to prevent urban flooding.
  • Water Management: Water harvesting practices should be adopted to enhance water availability during dry spells.
