Result: West Indies won by 134 runs
In a significant milestone for Ugandan cricket, the Cricket Cranes faced two-time World Champions West Indies for the first time in a T20I match at the World Cup on June 9.
The historic showdown took place at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday morning.
West Indies Innings: Charles & Russell Dominate
West Indies set a formidable target, posting 173 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Johnson Charles led the charge with a solid knock of 44 runs, well supported by Andre Russell’s unbeaten 30. Despite Uganda’s valiant efforts, West Indies managed to build a substantial total, showcasing their prowess with the bat amidst a handful of misfield fumbles by the Ugandans.
Uganda’s Struggle: Hosein Shines
Facing a daunting target, Uganda encountered a formidable West Indies bowling attack. Left-arm orthodox spinner Akeal Hosein emerged as Uganda’s tormentor, wreaking havoc with his spellbinding bowling performance. With an incisive haul of 5 wickets for 11 runs, Hosein led the charge as Uganda faltered, ultimately being bowled out for 39 runs in 12 overs. Juma Miyaji (13*) was the lone batsman to reach double figures.
“Tough day for us. It is a very steep learning curve. Just shows the difference in class. We were outplayed in all departments but we must take the learnings from it: as a batting unit, what we can do better to keep us in the game,” said Uganda Captain Brian Masaba.
