The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Kamya, has officially cleared the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, of any impropriety regarding allegations of unaccounted-for property in the United Kingdom. The investigation, which has been ongoing for several months, found no evidence linking Among to the property in question, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
In a statement released today, IGG Kamya explained that the investigation was thorough and exhaustive, ultimately vindicating Among, who had consistently denied ownership of the property. Lydia Felly Akullu, a senior IGG official, was also present at the press briefing, where Kamya urged public servants to fully disclose their assets, as required by law.
The controversy surrounding Speaker Among began last year, when reports surfaced alleging that she owned a luxurious property in London. This led to accusations of corruption, with some sources suggesting that Among had acquired the property through illicit means. Additionally, the UK government imposed sanctions on Among, citing alleged corruption.
In response, Among vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the sanctions were politically motivated in retaliation for her role in passing the controversial anti-homosexuality bill in Uganda.
Following the sanctions, the IGG launched an investigation into the claims, which took several months to complete. The final report revealed that Among did not own any property in the UK. Kamya also emphasized that owning property outside Uganda is not an issue as long as public servants declare their assets and income to the IGG every two years, in compliance with the Leadership Code Act.
The clearing of Speaker Among has provided some closure to the ongoing controversy, with many now calling for stricter adherence to asset declaration laws to prevent future misunderstandings and potential abuses of power.
