The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, has returned to Uganda after a three-month retreat in Namibia, where he was receiving medical attention.
The Kabaka’s extended stay in Namibia had been a subject of controversy, especially among his subjects in Buganda. The situation escalated when Namibia denied an extension of his visa, prompting his return. The Namibian government cited the need to protect its diplomatic staff worldwide, who faced pressure from Baganda residents in those countries.
The diplomatic impasse was resolved when the Kabaka decided to cut short his stay and return home. The issue had sparked calls from several activists and social media figures for the resignation of the Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, due to his handling of the situation. However, Mayiga maintained that the Kabaka would return based on medical advice, not social media demands.
The Kabaka was welcomed at the airport by the Nnabagereka (Queen) and the Katikkiro of Buganda in the early hours of Monday morning.
