Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi is currently receiving treatment at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre, a private mental health facility in Namibia.

This information was confirmed by Namibia’s ambassador to Germany, Martin Andjaba, in response to a letter dated May 21 from a concerned Ugandan citizen based in Germany.

In his reply on May 24, Ambassador Andjaba clarified that the Kabaka is not being detained in Namibia, contrary to reports circulating on social media. He emphasized that the Kabaka is in the country solely for medical reasons. “He arrived in the country in April 2024 for treatment and is currently at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre in the Outjo area in the Kunene Region,” Andjaba wrote.

Security measures have been put in place to ensure the Kabaka’s safety during his stay in Namibia. The specific nature of the Kabaka’s condition has not been disclosed.

However, the facility’s website indicates that it offers personalized treatment for various mental health issues, including depressive disorders, anxiety-related disorders, personality dysfunctions (psychosis), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), stress management, somatoform disorders, substance-related disorders, and childhood-related disorders.

The Kabaka’s prolonged absence from public events has caused concern among some members of the Baganda community.

Earlier this month, Katikkiro Peter Mayiga informed Lukiiko that the Kabaka was recuperating after medical treatment abroad.

Subsequent photos showed the Kabaka meeting Uganda’s ambassador to Namibia, Joseph Ndawula, at what appeared to be an eco-lodge. These images have now been identified as having been taken at Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre.

About the Facility

Okonguarri Psychotherapeutic Centre, established in 1996, caters to patients from the region and around the world. Situated on a 5000-hectare expanse of pristine wilderness, the facility offers a serene environment for recovery. Founded by Herman Raath, a German psychologist, the center was inspired by the need for a unique and smaller, patient-friendly therapeutic environment. Raath’s vision was to provide personalized treatment and one-on-one attention, addressing the shortcomings of traditional mental health institutions that are often overburdened with too many patients.

Guests at the center are treated to the beauty and purity of Africa in all its splendor, creating a therapeutic backdrop for their recovery.
