The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has used the occasion of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Leaders visit to Bulange to offer counsel on how leadership and institutions work.
The visit, which included prominent figures such as the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, who also serves as the NUP spokesperson, Secretary-General Lewis Rubongoya, and other party MPs and officials, was intended to show support for the upcoming Kabaka Run. The event aims to raise funds to combat the AIDS pandemic by 2030.
Addressing the gathering, Mayiga emphasized the importance of tolerance and patience among leaders. He likened leadership challenges to those faced within a family, highlighting that disagreements and differences are inevitable but should be resolved amicably.
“You have to learn to tolerate each other. You can have two children who don’t resemble each other. What are you going to do, throw one out? You have to learn to be patient with each other,” Mayiga remarked.
“Everyone who makes mistakes is not killed. If Rashida or Kabanda makes mistakes, call them and sit and sort things out amicably. When you get used to abusing each other, the next thing will be to strangle each other. You have to learn these things while you are in the process of taking power. If you don’t learn them, what will happen when you get to power? Will you even accept criticism? I, as your elder and your Katikiro, I have to tell you this.,” Mayiga added
Mayiga’s advice comes amid tensions between Mathias Mpuuga and the NUP leadership regarding a 500 million shillings service award he allegedly received while serving as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
