Five anti-corruption activists, including NTV and K FM radio presenter Faiza Salima, also known as Faiza Fabz, were arraigned before Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court this morning to apply for bail.

Alongside Faiza, those charged include Thomas Kanzira, Olupot Benard Ewalu, Hamala Edgar Barlow, and Aljab Musinguzi. They were detained on July 23, 2024, following a peaceful protest against widespread corruption in the Ugandan Parliament.

The activists had specifically targeted Speaker Anita Among, demanding her resignation due to her perceived role in the corruption allegations. They also called for the resignation of four backbench commissioners accused of controversially awarding themselves 1.7 billion shillings as “service awards.”

The charge sheet alleges that the accused, on July 23, 2024, gathered at Oasis Mall Nakumatt in Kampala, shouting slogans such as “Anita Among must resign” and displaying placards with similar messages. This, the prosecution claims, caused annoyance and obstruction to the public and was likely to lead to a “breach of the peace.”

The activists face charges of being a common nuisance, and idle and disorderly conduct.
