Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikiro of Buganda, has issued a stern warning to parents regarding the dangers of extravagance and overindulgence, particularly in the context of high school prom celebrations.
Mayiga’s remarks come in response to recent reports and images circulating on social media depicting lavish displays of wealth at Elite High School prom event.
Among the extravagant displays was the arrival of one student via helicopter, reportedly costing the parent a staggering 3 million shillings for a mere 20-minute flight. Additionally, luxury cars hired by parents for their children’s prom transportation further fueled concerns over excessive spending.
Expressing his dismay, Mayiga addressed the issue during a session of the Lukiko, stating, “I don’t know what is happening in our schools. Children are hiring cars worth billions to go dance with their peers.”
He emphasized the importance of instilling responsibility and fiscal discipline in children from a young age, citing a Baganda proverb that translates to “a child who is not disciplined in childhood will bring sorrow in old age.”
Mayiga continued his critique, questioning the rationale behind allowing children to drive cars worth billions to prom events. He stressed the need for parents to establish clear budgetary guidelines for their children and hold them accountable for their spending.
“Regardless of one’s financial means, children must learn to live within a budget. If they exceed their allowance, they should be required to justify their expenses,” Mayiga asserted.
In addition to cautioning against extravagant spending on prom celebrations, Mayiga raised concerns about the trend of parents purchasing expensive gadgets, such as smartphones priced at 7 million shillings, for their children.
He urged parents to adopt a more prudent approach to parenting and financial management, prioritizing the cultivation of responsible behavior and values in their children.
