When discussing Uganda’s representation at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France, the focus often falls on athletes competing for medals. However, Uganda is also being represented off the track by Shamirah Nabadda, a distinguished female referee.

On Wednesday, Nabadda served as the fourth official in the opening match of Group B, where Iraq defeated Ukraine 2-1. Her responsibilities included supervising substitution procedures, checking players’ and substitutes’ equipment, indicating additional time, and informing the referee of any misconduct by the technical staff.

Nabadda is among the 89 match officials (21 referees, 42 assistant referees, 20 video match officials, and six support referees) from 45 countries officiating at the Olympic Football Tournaments Paris 2024. She is one of four female match officials from Africa, alongside Bouchra Karboubi and Jermoumi Fatiha from Morocco, and Diana Chikotesha from Zambia.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Shamirah Nabadda first gained prominence in 2018 when she was appointed to referee a crucial game between title-chasing KCCA FC and relegation-threatened Masavu FC in Entebbe. At 23, she became the youngest-ever female center referee to officiate a top-flight match in Ugandan football.

Since her breakthrough, Nabadda has officiated numerous top-flight league games and was selected to officiate at the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations and the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League.

Educational Background and Early Football Involvement

Nabadda holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Bishop Stuart University. Her journey in football began as a player during her school days at Masaka S.S., where she was part of the school team. Although she played football for enjoyment, she was keen on the rules of the game, often puzzling her teammates with her curiosity.

She later joined Western United in the top-flight women’s league. In 2015, she was recommended by Abbas Sendyowa, a former FUFA delegate for Mbarara and a close family friend, to attend a refereeing course at the FUFA technical center in Njeru.

While still playing for Western United, Nabadda began officiating low-tier football tournaments. By 2016, she had established herself in the sport, officiating at the Copa Coca-Cola schools tournament and the top-flight women’s league.

Current Role and Achievements

Nabadda’s journey from player to referee has been marked by significant milestones. Her current role at the 2024 Olympics underscores her status as a trailblazer in Ugandan football. As she continues to represent her country on the global stage, Shamirah Nabadda’s story is one of dedication, passion, and breaking barriers.
