Embattled NUP legislator Hon. Mathias Mpuuga has intensified preparations for his upcoming homecoming and thanksgiving rally in Katovu, Masaka, with billboards prominently displayed throughout the town.
The event, scheduled for June 21, will feature Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga as the chief guest.
Mpuuga is determined to demonstrate his political resilience despite tensions with the NUP leadership.
The discord began when it was revealed that Mpuuga accepted a 500 million shilling service award during his tenure as Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Despite calls for his resignation, he has remained steadfast, insisting he did nothing wrong and will not step down as a Commissioner of Parliament.
Supporting Mpuuga are fellow legislators Abed Bwanika, Joyce Bagala, and veteran politician Mike Mabike. Bagala, speaking on a Kampala radio station, declared, “I don’t fear losing the NUP card and I can’t be held at ransom for being Mpuuga’s ally.”
A viral video featuring Bwanika reading out names that resembled a party outfit has fueled rumors that Mpuuga may announce the formation of a new political party during his homecoming event at Katovu.
In Parliament, Mpuuga is also facing an impeachment attempt led by Hon. Theodore Ssekikubo. The motion targets Mpuuga and three other backbench Commissioners from the NRM party.
However, the impeachment effort appears to be struggling as the movers have yet to secure the necessary 175 signatures.
Mpuuga’s rally and the potential announcements during the event are highly anticipated, as they may significantly impact the political landscape in Masaka and beyond.
