Nyendo Mukungwe legislator and Commissioner of Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, has declared his unwavering allegiance to the National Unity Platform (NUP), affirming his stance as a founding member of the party.

Mpuuga’s statement comes in response to recent moves by NUP leadership to withdraw his nomination as Commissioner of Parliament, a decision he vehemently opposes.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mpuuga reiterated his dedication to NUP, emphasizing his integral role in its establishment alongside fellow comrades. He stated, “I am here to affirm that I am not leaving NUP, a party I founded with my colleagues consciously. And I am not here to destroy or kill it.” He dismissed speculations of his potential departure.

Mpuuga’s remarks followed the public release of a letter by NUP to Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, notifying her of the party’s intention to withdraw his nomination and replace him with Francis Zaake, the Member of Parliament for Mityana Municipality.

The letter, dated March 18, 2024, detailed NUP’s decision to rescind Mpuuga’s nomination and nominate Zaake instead, citing constitutional and procedural grounds.

In response, Mpuuga condemned NUP’s decision, asserting his right to retain his position. “I will not step down as Commissioner of Parliament,” he declared firmly. “I have found no wrongdoing on my part, whether in law or common sense.”

Moreover, Mpuuga challenged the accusations leveled against him by NUP, particularly regarding allegations of corruption and abuse of office. Refuting these claims, he maintained his integrity and commitment to upholding ethical standards.

NUP has accused Mpuuga of involvement in allocating hefty sums of public funds, purportedly for service awards, during his tenure as a parliamentary leader.

However, Mpuuga vehemently denies these accusations and has vowed to defend his reputation against what he perceives as slander and politically motivated attacks.
