NUP deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Mathias Mpuuga’s affiliation with the party.

In a press conference held at the NUP offices, Mufumbiro clarified that the party has never initiated any process to dismiss Mpuuga from its ranks. He emphasized that Mpuuga’s actions, particularly regarding the alleged mishandling of 500 million shillings, have raised concerns within the party.

“Our issue with Mpuuga revolves around the 500 million shillings, which he acquired through dubious means. You can’t distribute resources that you haven’t legitimately acquired,” Mufumbiro stated.

Mufumbiro also questioned Mpuuga’s recent statements regarding his role in the founding of NUP. He pointed out discrepancies in Mpuuga’s remarks, citing conflicting statements made by the legislator on different occasions.

“Yesterday, he claimed to be a founding member of NUP, but during a recent interview, he referred to the party as a ‘family affair.’ This raises doubts about his intentions and loyalties,” Mufumbiro remarked.

The NUP spokesperson further insinuated that Mpuuga may be influenced by external forces, suggesting a possible allegiance to President Museveni’s government.

“I believe he works for Museveni because his refusal to heed the party’s directives indicates that he may be receiving instructions from another source,” Mufumbiro asserted.

Reflecting on Mpuuga’s political trajectory, Mufumbiro highlighted the lawmaker’s transition from the Democratic Party (DP) to NUP. He accused Mpuuga of prioritizing personal ambitions over the party’s overarching goal of regime change.

“Mpuuga had no significant political stature before joining NUP. He sought refuge in our party, seeking nominations and positions of authority. Unlike us, who are committed to bringing about change in government, Mpuuga appears content with maintaining his political career,” Mufumbiro stated.

Regarding Mpuuga’s denial of any meeting requests, Mufumbiro dismissed the notion, suggesting that Mpuuga should prioritize listening to the concerns of the party leadership and members.

“He should take the time to listen to what the party expects from him and act accordingly,” Mufumbiro concluded.
