Michael Nuwagira Kaguta, popularly known as Toyota, has been appointed as the National Vice Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) during a Central Committee meeting held in Entebbe on Monday.

The decision to appoint Toyota to this role follows the appointment of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the former leader of the civic movement previously known as MK Movement, as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

Explaining the transition, the PLU’s Director of Communications, Andrew Mwenda, clarified, “Because our leader was appointed CDF, he can’t be involved in our work.”

In addition to Toyota’s appointment, David Kabanda, the Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, has been elevated to the position of Secretary General of the Movement. Meanwhile, Hon. Michael Mawanda will assume the role of Director of Mobilisation, and prominent city lawyer Edwin Karugire will serve as the Director of Legal Affairs.

Other key appointments include Michael Katungi as Director of External Affairs, Lillian Aber as National Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, and Minister of State for Gender, Youth, and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, who will continue to serve as National Vice Chairperson in charge of Western Uganda.

Before his appointment as CDF, Gen Muhoozi described the PLU as a non-partisan and non-denominational civil organization focused on protecting Uganda against foreign interference and promoting unity among Ugandans.

“We have people from every tribe, every race, every religion, and every political party in the PLU. All we care about is whether you love Uganda. Are you willing to sacrifice for Uganda?” Muhoozi emphasized during a Baraza in Masaka in March 2024.

The Leader of PLU say their mission also includes assisting vulnerable community members and combating wastage of resources and fighting corruption in Uganda. However most Ugandans believe its an outfit created as a vehicle to push the Muhoozi Presidency agenda.
