Security forces have deployed heavily at the venue where the National Unity Platform (NUP) was set to hold a gathering, resulting in the arrest of more than twenty individuals, including members of NUP’s advance team and several journalists.
The detained individuals are currently being held at Kamuli Central Police Station.
Speaking to the press before departing from the party’s Kavule office, NUP leader Bobi Wine expressed disappointment over the police’s actions. “We notified the police and fulfilled every lawful requirement, hoping they would respect and operate under the law. But to our surprise, they have immediately started frustrating our events,” he said.
The NUP has been planning these events for the past three months as part of the second leg of their national tour, which also aims to register new party members.
David Lewis Rubongoya, NUP’s Secretary General, reiterated that the party had properly informed the police about the tour.
“For the record, last week we notified the police about the upcoming NUP nationwide tour. We provided them with our full schedule and evidence of venue bookings,” Rubongoya stated.
He refuted claims made by Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, who alleged that the party had not notified the authorities.
