A purported letter attributed to President Museveni circulating on social media regarding parliamentary service awards has been disowned by State House, terming it a “forged letter” that should be disregarded.
The alleged letter, dated May 3, 2024, purportedly addressed to Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka, questioned a meeting chaired by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, where a service award totaling Shs1.7 billion was allegedly distributed among four lawmakers serving as commissioners.
However, in a statement from the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) yesterday, the authenticity of the letter was questioned. The notice, lacking typical official markings, emphasized that the circulating letter was forged and should not be given credence.
Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Mr. Faruk Kirunda, reiterated State House’s position, affirming that the letter was indeed a forgery and not sanctioned by the President.
He further indicated that security agencies would undertake investigations into the source of the purportedly falsified document.
“The intelligence will follow up,” Kirunda responded when asked about potential investigations.
The alleged letter had copied recipients including the Inspector General of Government, the Director of Public Prosecution, and the chairperson of the NRM caucus.
It purportedly quoted the President expressing surprise at the award, indicating that neither the Prime Minister nor the Finance Minister, who sit on the Parliamentary Commission, were aware of it.
This incident follows recent scrutiny of Speaker Anita Among, including investigations into her alleged ownership of properties and bank accounts in the UK.
The British government previously sanctioned Among for her involvement in the Karamoja iron sheets scandal.
