Rwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo has expressed frustration over the slow response from opposition MPs to sign a petition aimed at censuring four parliamentary commissioners. These commissioners are accused of awarding themselves close to 1.7 billion shillings.

Initiated last week by Ssekikubo on the floor of Parliament, the petition has struggled to gain momentum, securing only 100 of the 175 signatures needed for the motion to pass.

This morning, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi signed the petition and urged all National Unity Platform (NUP) MPs to do the same.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has three commissioners implicated in the scandal, Esther Afoyochan, Solomon Silwanyi, and Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira, while the opposition is represented by Mathias Mpuuga.

Mpuuga has refused to step down despite his party’s requests, insisting that no unlawful actions were taken.

Sources indicate that the NRM MPs are being pressured by the NRM caucus to return the money and step down before the motion is brought to the floor of Parliament.

The slow uptake of signatures has raised concerns about accountability and integrity within the Parliament, as MPs from both sides of the aisle grapple with the implications of the scandal.
