A dog owned by Dr. Andrew Obuku, former president of the Uganda Doctors’ Association, broke loose from its kennel and launched a fatal attack on a baby boy named Raphael at their residence in Canaan Estate, Mawugulu Cell, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District.

The incident unfolded while the baby’s parents entrusted him to the care of their newly hired housemaid, Sharon Nuwarinda.

Sharon, recounting the traumatic episode, shared that she had placed Raphael on the veranda while she tended to her chores. Suddenly, she noticed the dog advancing and sprang into action to shield the child.

Despite her efforts, the dog seized the boy, inflicting grievous injuries to his head and also biting Sharon on the thigh before retreating to its kennel.

Neighbors responded swiftly to Sharon’s distress calls, but tragically, Raphael succumbed to his injuries before reaching Kisubi Hospital.

In response to the incident, Dr. Ssekasala, a veterinarian, emphasized the importance of vigilant pet ownership. “Dogs are typically gentle creatures and rarely pose a threat to humans, especially within the confines of a home. However, any dog displaying aggressive behavior should be dealt with promptly,” he stated.

Dr. Ssekasala cautioned that signs of rabidness in dogs should not be overlooked. “There are usually warning signs indicating a dog’s deteriorating behavior, such as increased agitation, disobedience, and aggression even towards familiar individuals. If these signs are observed, immediate action should be taken,” he advised.
