Prominent businessman Mutaasa Kafeero has filed a lawsuit against car dealer Yassah Matovu, accusing him of attempting to defraud him of Shs 300 million in a car sale gone awry.
According to documents obtained by Bbeg Media, Kafeero entered into a purchase agreement with Matovu on February 1, 2024, to buy a 2023 model Range Rover valued at Shs 900 million. The agreement stipulated that Kafeero would make a down payment of Shs 300 million and settle the remaining Shs 600 million in 12 installments of Shs 50 million each.
Kafeero paid the initial Shs 300 million on February 1, 2024, and added Shs 50 million three weeks later for the first installment, bringing the total payment to Shs 350 million. Matovu delivered the car, but it was a 2022 Range Rover Vogue model instead of the agreed 2023 model.
Kafeero rejected the car and demanded a refund. After two months of negotiations, both parties signed a written agreement on April 1, 2024. The agreement stated that Matovu would either source a 2023 model Range Rover Vogue or sell the 2022 model and refund the Shs 300 million.
“I, Matovu Yassah Seguya, owner of Range Rover Vogue UBQ 436E grey in colour, have taken back the vehicle from Mr/Hajj Mutaasa Kafeero with the intention to sell it and source for him another car specifically Range Rover Vogue 2023 model, petrol engine, seven-seater. Failure to source the car, I will sell the Range Rover Vogue UBQ 436E and refund Hajj Mutaasa as per our agreement of February 1, 2024,” the agreement read.
Kafeero claims Matovu only refunded Shs 50 million and later asserted that the down payment was non-refundable, prompting Kafeero to take the matter to court.
Represented by Muwema and Company Advocates, Kafeero is seeking the court’s intervention to determine whether the car delivered meets the purchase agreement’s specifications and whether he is entitled to a refund of Shs 300 million.
