Uganda made its historic debut in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Monday, June 3rd, with 11 players becoming the first from their nation to participate in this prestigious tournament.

The occasion was further marked by Uganda’s captain winning the pre-match toss. Adding to the memorable start, the captain took the first wicket at the ‘Big Dance’, showcasing the nation’s determination to make a mark on the world stage.

Afghanistan Innings: Gurbaz & Ibrahim Shine

Afghanistan set a formidable target, scoring 183 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs, largely thanks to a 154-run opening stand between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Gurbaz top-scored with 76 runs, displaying an array of aggressive strokes, while Zadran provided excellent support with a well-crafted 70.

Masaba Leads Uganda’s Recovery

Despite the explosive start, Uganda fought back admirably. Captain Brian Masaba broke the 154-run partnership in the 15th over, removing Ibrahim Zadran. Ramjani then dismissed Gurbaz, reducing Afghanistan to 157 for 2. Masaba continued Uganda’s resurgence by removing Najibullah Zadran in the 17th over, and Cosmas Kyewuta picked up two late wickets. Remarkably, Uganda didn’t concede a single boundary in the last six overs, a first in World Cup history.

Uganda Innings: Farooqi’s Five-For

In response, Uganda struggled against a potent Afghan bowling attack. The team was bundled out for 58 in 16 overs, with Robinson Obuya (14) and Riazat Ali Shah (11) being the only batsmen to reach double figures. Fazalhaq Farooqi was Afghanistan’s star, claiming a five-for (5-9). Rashid Khan took 2-12.

Afghanistan’s victory by 125 runs showcased their experience in the format, starting their campaign with a bang.

Despite the tough debut for Uganda, the match will be remembered for its historical significance. The Cricket Cranes displayed determination, particularly in their bowling recovery.

Up next for Uganda is a match-up against Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the same oval in the early hours of Thursday, June 6th.
