The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have apprehended a fake lieutenant accused of illegally evicting locals and seizing their land in Kakiri town council, Wakiso district.

The imposter, identified as Adams Ssentongo, was found dressed in UPDF attire adorned with fake lieutenant insignia. Initially attempting to pass himself off as a military officer when confronted by UPDF personnel, Ssentongo eventually confessed that he had never undergone any military training. He admitted obtaining the uniform from a friend who serves in the army.

“Let me tell you the truth, I am not a soldier and I have never attended any military school. I just got these uniforms from my friend Mugisha, who is a soldier. I use these uniforms to threaten people and take their property,” Ssentongo confessed.

Major Charles Kabona, spokesperson for UPDF’s First Division based in Kakiri, explained that they launched a search for Ssentongo following numerous complaints from the public about a purported soldier harassing locals and attempting to seize their land.

“We received numerous complaints about a soldier threatening people and illegally evicting them, causing tension in the area. With tips from locals, we tracked down the individual tarnishing our image. Ssentongo was apprehended in possession of military uniforms and equipment,” Kabona stated.

Ssentongo was accompanied by another individual named Hannington Ssekandi, who claimed affiliation with the Internal Security Organization (ISO) and presented purported military credentials. However, UPDF officers doubted the authenticity of his claims and subsequently arrested him alongside Ssentongo.

“These two individuals will face charges of impersonation, damaging our reputation, and unlawful possession of military uniforms and equipment. They were also found with a fake pistol and a walkie-talkie. They will be arraigned in military court,” Kabona added.

Incidents of civilians masquerading as military officers or soldiers have been a recurring issue in Wakiso district.
