US Democrats are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the replacement for Joe Biden, who announced on Sunday that he would not seek reelection.

Biden stated he would be stepping aside to focus on his duties as President for the remainder of his term. “It is time for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a press release.

Following his announcement, Biden endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party nominee. “Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this,” Biden said.

Many politicians and former leaders have expressed their support for Harris’s nomination. If she secures the nomination and wins the election, Harris would become the second female Democratic presidential nominee after Hillary Clinton and could potentially be the first female president of the United States.
