In a bizarre incident that unfolded at a bank branch in a Rio suburb, Brazilian police reported that a woman attempted to secure a loan using a deceased 68-year-old man in a wheelchair.
The shocking event occurred on Tuesday, where Erika Vieira Nunes brought the cadaver into the bank and insisted to the teller that the man was seeking a loan amounting to 17,000 reais ($3,250), as revealed by security camera footage.
The footage captured Nunes holding a pen and attempting to guide the man’s hand to sign, all the while speaking to him as if he were responsive. “Uncle, are you listening? You need to sign,” she reportedly said, trying to coax a signature from the deceased.
Bank employees became suspicious when they observed the man’s head slumping back whenever Nunes released her hold. Recognizing the abnormality of the situation, they promptly alerted the police, who arrived and apprehended Nunes on fraud charges.
The deceased individual was subsequently transported to the morgue.
Nunes’ defense attorney argued that the man had passed away at the bank; however, a police forensic analysis contradicted this claim, establishing that the man had expired earlier while lying down.
